Win rate represents the percentage of total trades that end in profit. While win rate is a key metric, evaluating win rate in isolation can be misleading. A strategy with a 90% win rate can still lose money if losses are huge, whereas a 35% win rate strategy can be highly profitable with large risk-to-reward ratios.

Win rate and profit factor are calculated as follows:

Win Rate (%) = (Winning Trades / Total Trades) × 100

Losing Trades = Total Trades - Winning Trades

Profit Factor = Gross Profit ($) / Gross Loss ($)

• Win Rate: Percentage of trades resulting in positive PnL.
• Profit Factor: Ratio of total dollars won to total dollars lost. A Profit Factor > 1.0 indicates a profitable system; > 2.0 indicates an exceptional edge.

Suppose you record 40 total trades in your journal. Out of these, 24 were winners generating $2,400 in gross profit, and 16 were losers resulting in $1,200 in gross losses.

1. Calculate Win Rate: (24 / 40) × 100 = 60.0% Win Rate.
2. Calculate Losing Trades: 40 - 24 = 16 Losses.
3. Calculate Profit Factor: $2,400 / $1,200 = 2.00 Profit Factor.

A Profit Factor of 2.00 means your strategy generates $2.00 in profit for every $1.00 lost.

• Obsessing over high win rates: Chasing an 80%+ win rate often causes traders to remove stop losses or hold losing positions indefinitely to avoid taking a loss.
